The top English language cybercrime site in the world, it offered online tutorials in account takeovers, credit card deception and money laundering. Equipment – including false ATM and pin machines and everything needed to set up a credit card factory – was available. From the bank of computers inside, a former pizza bar worker ran an international cyber “supermarket” selling stolen credit card and account details costing the banking industry tens of millions. Another report by the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) in the United Kingdom shows a different picture of IP and counterfeit-affected product categories (IP Crime Group, 2015). The report summarizes independently reported IP crimes through CrimestoppersFootnote 11 and investigations of counterfeits by Trading Standards (TS)Footnote 12 between 2014 and 2015.
DarkMarket was uncovered as part of a larger investigation into web-hosting company Cyberbunker, The Guardian reports. Cyberbunker (which is actually located in a former NATO bunker) housed servers for both The Pirate Bay and WikiLeaks in the past, and if this DarkMarket case is any example, seems to be a valuable starting point for future investigations into other illegal sites. Having established the accuracy of the classifier to predict the unlabeled listings (i.e., label all the unannotated listings), the entire annotated data was utilized to re-train the LinearSVC classifier with the same parameters. The agency also pointed out that buying on the dark web also carries a certain amount of risk, such as acquiring adulterated drugs, exposing your devices to malware and risking prosecution.
Although seized products can also inform us about offers, they are only a subset of sold counterfeits from the overall market. Thus, comparisons of dark market listings with seized goods are informative, but they do not always encompass the same measures. Other approaches to counterfeiting might involve one or more of the 25 techniques of situational crime prevention (Clarke, 1995; Freilich & Newman, 2018), which are also informed by Rational Choice theory and the RAA. One such technique is target hardening, which aims to make the target of an offence (e.g. counterfeiting a product) less viable for the offender.
Understanding Darkmarkets
Since only a limited number of containers can be checked, the selection procedure can strongly impact possible finds. At the same time, the Italian authorities have moved against two other dark web markets, DeepSea and Berlusconi, and arrested four people alleged to be involved in their administration. We analyzed the number of listings for all major cryptomarkets currently active. These numbers suggest that White House is the new leader in terms of activity, with over 29,000 listings for sale.
Both Metals and Pharmaceuticals show high standard deviations, which can be attributed to a few very high-priced listings. For example, “28 g PSEUDO SPEED” for $2000 or “Lot of 10 High Quality Counterfeit Gold Bars” for $5799. Figure 2 shows how many products (not just counterfeits) were offered across all markets over time.
The term darkmarkets refers to online marketplaces that are typically hidden from standard search engines and require special software to access. These platforms facilitate the exchange of goods and services, often including illegal items that cannot be found on the open internet.
And if the creators of a fully peer-to-peer black market were to be locked up? If all goes according to plan, their leaderless community would go about business as usual. Considerable money was exchanged, though actual transactions took place away from the site for security reasons. Renukanth Subramaniam, 33, was revealed today as the founder and a major “orchestrator” of the secret DarkMarket website, where elite fraudsters bought and sold personal data, after it was infiltrated by the FBI and the US Secret Service. To the casual observer, there was little to distinguish the Java Bean internet cafe in Wembley from the hundreds of others dotted around the capital.
